Little impromptu Grenache shootout last night with some friends at Giuseppes downtown San Luis Obispo. Didn’t really plan it, just grabbed three bottles and they turned out to be all 16’s with 1 Santa Barbara, 1 Paso Robles, and one 50/50.
The Kings Carey Spear Vineyard soft and nice, easy tannin, yummy fruit, good and ripe with plenty of acid The Dusty Nabor Paso (Frankel Vineyard?) lots of oak, dark and deep with lots of chocolate and spice and a touch of brett. The Shirah half Murmur Vineyard SMV and half Talbert Willow Creek Paso REALLY closed in. Tight and dumb and never opened up. Will be really interested in visiting it today and beyond. Perhaps it was the company it was in, but just never expressed itself to anyone at the table. edit: Got into it a day later and it had *started* to blossom a little. The James Sparks wine got drained, the Nabor almost gone, and the Shirah has a bunch left to play with, if that tells you how popular they were! There was also a bottle of quite beautiful Arneis off the Giuseppe’s list of Italians. Food was amazing, service exemplary, despite our jumble of shared plates, myriad of bottles and endless glasses. Thank you for fitting us in @slogiuseppes! Palazzo was always my favorite Giuseppe’s, but Cucina Rustica is growing on me…
